The Kawasaki KLR 650 is a favorite of the Progressive team. It’s ugly, klunky, underpowered and couldn’t pick up chicks if you covered it in shoes and parked it on a pile of cash, but for the very reasons in the video it is the essence of why motorcycles are great.

HD as well as many other cruiser manufacturers have chosen to utilize an open bath damper rod style of front suspension. Dating back to the 40’s this simplistic method of damping has evolved very little and offers a limited range of ride quality.

Not that it would be difficult, but how does one improve on this system? For the most part, it involves binning all of the fork internals and replacing them with a sealed cartridge style damper. Based on similar technology that we use in our high end shocks, the cartridge seals the damping oil, keeps it under pressure (preventing foaming) and prevents contamination (typical of open bath forks). The stock damper rod is replaced with deflective discs which allow for superior damping control. The addition of a progressive rate spring and a preload adjuster kit (like your front end firm?, not a problem add a spacer to the spring) make for superior ride, greatly reduced brake dive and virtually no corner wallowing. Available for HD Touring models, Softail models and soon for the Dyna. We love the classic lines of the older Beemers, combined with a bit of Cafe Racer Styling, these machines become instant eyecatchers. This site does a great job covering the subject from build pics to sourcing references. Nice work!

We get fan pics on a regular basis, lots of great bikes and serious riders. We love that stuff, but this one stuck out more than others. That and May has typically been a celebration of women riders. Nice work Tracy. We’re proud to part of your build and riding experience!

Here’s the note she included:

Heres a few pics of my 05 Harley Road Glide. Just newly painted last month with thanks to my husband.

I am using your Monotube kit for and love it! Handling is awesome. Your kit allows me to do a 2 in drop…just what my bike needs to give it ‘that’ look.
It was easy to install with help from my husband. He told me that if I wanted a ‘big boy’ bike then I had to wrench on it too!

Thanks so much!
